I just posted another YouTube video featuring LocoFi in a Dead Rail/battery operations use.
The New Video is Titled:
Making and Using a Portable Dead Rail Demonstration HO Layout - Part 2
The video describes the installation of LocoFi in a Walthers' EMD GP15-1 locomotive with a trailing "battery car"/gondola.
My Webpage titled “A Journey Into HO Scale Model Railroading in the
21st Century” is where I’ve posted a lot more information on my foam board constructed, portable, Dead Rail demonstration layout. It also has information on the conversion of a Walther’s EMD GP15-1 for Dead Rail operation using LocoFi and lots of other useful information and concepts.
Part 3 is in the works now and covers setting up the LocoFi APP and configuring the locomotive.
Keep up the great work on this excellent product. The excitement of this device just keeps driving me ahead to learn more and more.
My granddaughter really enjoyed using the Android phone to run a train on the Dead Rail demo layout yesterday. She had a HUGE grin on her face the whole time.
Sincerely,
Ken Myers
Ok. Took me a while to search this one (for some reason I couldn't find it in my bookmarks earlier) but here's another useful information source: https://rogershobbycenter.com/lipoguide
This is in fact the one we quote more often than the Oscar Liang website. Apologies for not being able to get to it earlier.
Plus, there's plenty other websites, mostly repeated information but sometimes extra unique info.
Another useful website: https://www.genstattu.com/bw/
Of particular interest are their batteries. No affiliation but yes, they are local. I have talked to them. I think they are one of the top notch quality.
>...Battery University Website...
Yes. If someone wants to get into the chemistry and nitty gritty stuff, then Battery University is the one. Now, that's 40+ years experience speaking 😀. Thank you for sharing that!

Yes Oscar Liang's information is quite useful. I've referenced his information in my earlier newsletters for the Electric Flyers Only, (EFO).
I also find a lot of useful information at the Battery University Website. This link goes to information regarding all types of Lithium-ion batteries.
Thanks for all of encouragement and support,
Ken
>I'm planning a Part 5 which will be a kind of "here are the things I didn't tell ya about yet", and batteries would/could fit into that.
Yes. Experience based knowledge has no substitute. Don't worry. We are not looking for any legal advice or "how-to" or the "formal" battery expertise.
Just a few tips and highlights of your practical experience of 40+ years of battery usage should be good. For example, we find the following guide very useful to point to for someone who is just dipping their toes into the world of LiPos: https://oscarliang.com/lipo-battery-guide/
>...IMR Lithium-ion Lithium Manganese, LiMN, cells....
It would be interesting to learn about the new technological advances and new "safer" battery types.
Thank you.
Thank you.
I am not a battery expert in any real sense, as far as formal training goes, but I do have an extensive personal use knowledge with 40+ years of flying ONLY electrically powered, RC planes with all types of batteries.
I've also written on, reviewed and tested all of the kinds of batteries we use in modeling. I just learned of the IMR Lithium-ion Lithium Manganese, LiMN, cells and why they should be the safest going, with ease of use for our purposes. Both LiPos and typical 18650s, etc., are LiCO - Lithium Cobalt based with the LiPo being the most likely to be a problem if not handled and stored correctly,
I have the Part 3 videos made and they are in iMovie now for editing.
I plan to work on Part 4 tomorrow which is the consisting part.
I'm planning a Part 5 which will be a kind of "here are the things I didn't tell ya about yet", and batteries would/could fit into that.
Thanks for the comment,
Ken
Hello Ken,
Great follow up video on the installation. Good introduction to batteries. Being a battery expert as you are, it just occurred to us that why not an exclusive video on batteries and battery packs. That may ease out lot of the confusion for many when it comes to using rechargeable batteries.
Again, we are glad to hear kind words. We can only imagine the happiness that your granddaughter had and the additional contentment to you seeing her happy. This reminds us of those times when we setup a demo layout in train shows and let EVEN kids run the trains. Not only are they the first ones to try, they too have just that grin on their faces the whole time.
Thank you once again and looking forward to the loco configuration video.
Best regards,
LocoFi™ Team
